Manchester City won an eight-goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium, beating Sunderland 5-3 in matchday 5 of the Premier League. Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick for the visitors, but it wasn't enough as City struck five times, including a late goal from Erling Haaland.

The match

Sunderland's Dayann Méthalie was booked in the 8th minute. A minute later, Manchester City took the lead through Enzo Fernández, making it 1-0.

Sunderland responded quickly. In the 12th minute, Brian Brobbey converted an assist from Enzo Le Fée to level the score at 1-1.

City went back in front in the 29th minute when Rayan Cherki finished off a pass from Antoine Semenyo for 2-1. Sunderland equalised again four minutes later: Brobbey scored his second goal of the match, assisted by Thomas Meunier, for 2-2.

Before half-time, Manchester City retook the lead. In the 43rd minute, Antoine Semenyo scored with an assist from Marc Guéhi, making it 3-2 at the break.

The second half continued in the same fashion. Semenyo doubled his tally in the 57th minute, scoring unassisted for 4-2. Two minutes later, Brobbey completed his hat-trick, finishing an assist from Nilson Angulo to make it 4-3.

Sunderland made changes to try to find a way back into the game: Malick Fofana replaced Angulo in the 60th minute, and Wilson Isidor came on for Noah Sadiki in the 68th. Manchester City also rotated, bringing on Jérémy Doku for Iliman Ndiaye in the 75th minute.

Sunderland substituted Thomas Meunier for Trai Hume in the 79th minute. Two minutes later, Erling Haaland sealed the win for City, scoring from a Josko Gvardiol assist to make it 5-3. The goal was reviewed by VAR in the 83rd minute and confirmed. Manchester City's final substitution saw Nico O'Reilly replace Rayan Cherki in the 85th minute.
