Azerbaijan 1-0 Lithuania: Khaybulaev scores and is sent off in Nations League

Azerbaijan beat Lithuania 1-0 at the Bakcell Arena in Baku in matchday 4 of UEFA Nations League, League D, despite finishing the match with ten men.

The match

Lithuania took the lead in the 21st minute. Azerbaijan responded quickly, levelling the score and then going ahead through Abdulakh Khaybulaev in the 25th minute, making it 1-0.

Khaybulaev was booked in the 33rd minute. Lithuania's Modestas Vorobjovas received a yellow card in the 43rd minute, before being replaced at half-time as part of a double substitution that also saw Edgaras Utkus come on. Azerbaijan also made a change at the break, with Tural Bayramov replacing Vüsal İsgändärli.

The second half turned dramatic early on. In the 51st minute, Khaybulaev was sent off for Azerbaijan, while Ayxan Abbasov was shown a yellow card in the same minute. Two minutes later, a VAR review involving Khaybulaev was carried out. Lithuania's Artur Dolžnikov was booked in the 54th minute, and Azerbaijan's İsgändärli picked up a yellow card in the 57th.

Both sides made further substitutions in the second half: Azerbaijan brought on Oruc Məmmədov for Emil Safarov in the 64th minute, while Lithuania introduced Adrian Lickunas and Vykintas Slivka around the same period. Later changes saw Aleksey Isaev come on for Azerbaijan in the 80th minute, Rokas Lekiatas for Lithuania in the 83rd, and Tellur Mutallimov for Azerbaijan in the 88th.

In stoppage time, Elvin Badalov was booked in the 90+2nd minute. Lithuania's Eligijus Jankauskas received a yellow card in the 90+7th minute, and teammate A. Kučys was sent off in the same passage of play, leaving both sides to finish with reduced numbers on the pitch.

Azerbaijan held on for the win despite playing more than half an hour with a man down following Khaybulaev's dismissal.
